Bangladesh Facts
While Bangladesh is a relatively young country, having only been founded in 1971, it actually has a deep, rich history that travels into its past beyond the founding of the republic. In fact, the area has been populated for over four thousand years. Throughout the country you can find relics and remnants of these past civilizations.
Bangladesh suffers from floods frequently due to the fact that the country is located in monsoon territory. In 1998 two-thirds of the country was left in ruins because of flooding. People along the coastline are in the biggest danger from floods and monsoons. In 2007 thousands of people were killed due to the waves caused by Cyclone Sidr that hit the coastline. These waves carried as far as 30 miles inland once they hit. This was just three years after the devastation caused by the huge tsunamis that hit Bangladesh as a result of an underwater earthquake in 2004.
Bangladesh has had a few important citizens throughout its short modern history. One Bangladesh bank and its founder were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. The Grameen Bank and founder Muhammad Yunus were awarded the prize for their work with helping poor citizens of the country find loans.
